Magic 2015
#11
So far, this is okay, but a lot harder than Hearthstone for new players I think. Not sure how the matchmaking works but I think there is some sort of ranking system. The issue is that it is hard to get hold of powerful cards and make a decent deck early on, which makes it hard to get gold, which makes it hard to get cards and so on, unlike Hearthstone, which at least has some default decks you can use, and an XP system which unlocks new cards too. So I have been working on a deck and tweaking it afyer each match to try and get it fairly consistant.

You need to build your deck before going online really. Problem with tweaking your deck after each match is generally each player will have a different play style, so you are never specialising your deck you just make it generic. I find the best decks are specialised decks that only use 1 or 2 different mana's at most. My deck on 2015 is a red/black deck so I was thinking of following suit on the new one when I finally get to play it (maybe a week or two) How does the new one compare to 2015? I downloaded Hearthstone on android after loving Magic 2015 and despise it, Magic is the far superior game in my personal but limited experienced. (I am in no means a master of this game, I am a complete noob if I was honest - just thought id point that out)

The new one requires you to build your deck and unlock some boosters before you go online, and the only way to earn gold online is through matchmaking. Not even 2v2 gets you gold, and there is no Free-for-All mode either which is disappointing.

I have only done the Gideon campaign so far, but single player seems better than previous games, giving you the chance to get to play through each planeswalkers story and learn a bit about the lore etc. The deck building UI seems much better than last years game, although I havnt played around in depth with it yet.

The cards so far seem familiar if I'm honest as well, I'm recognising as lot of them - whether that's because newer cards are higher powered or rarer to find in boosters I don't know but I thought there would be new beats/enchantments and so on but I havnt come across any yet.

Does is still play exactly the same then? Same rules etc? Been thinking about some Magic tonight since this conversation, really need to get a deck going on the new one. What colour deck(s) do you use Johnny? Just curious of other peoples opinions.

Deck building in Magic is great, but the UI in general I don't find as good as Hearthstone. You can't just look at any cards on the field as much as you want, so unless you recognise the image and remember the abilities it is pretty hard to get to grips with, especially if new to the game.
You can get gold in Magic Duels by doing skill quests, story missions, AI duels or matchmaking duels, or quests. Then you buy boosters to get more cards. Currently the only available boosters are Origins, but surely they will be adding new packs when they are released IRL.
Now obviously I built a deck before matchmaking, because you have to. I've been playing mostly against AI at the moment, whilst tweaking my deck, because a good deck should be able to deal with most different strategies. There are some things that are obvious to be improved on in decks, that it doesn't matter what you're playing against, you can spot the issue. I'm trying Red-White at the moment.

I'm using a white/blue deck right now - I'm hoping to have the low mana white beasties as first defense, once some land is out I'm hoping for some mid tier blue beasts with tapping abilities etc and buff them with white spells and enchantments. Anything my opponent puts out bigger than I can deal with, I have blue spells to tap it or return to owners hand.

That's the theory, however until I unlock more boosters (only done about 6 so far) then that's all it is - a theory. Right now I'm spamming 1/1 and 2/2 same card stacks coz its all I have.

I have noticed that in all my boosters I didn't get any land cards - anyone know what the crack is with that?

You have loads of the basic lands from the starter pack I think, so perhaps the other lands are just rare in packs or something. I also noticed that the price per pack is the same regardless of quantity purchased.

Getting matched against players which are loads of ranks above me, which is annoying.

I think I'm going to stop playing Duels for a bit, as the Archetype quests are a bit broken if you are using a fully custom deck, so I'm not making money nearly as quickly as I ought to be. I will come back when they are fixed.

I have completed all of the story modes except Lilliana, where I can't get past the Archangel (third battle). Seems that the idea is to take advantage of your graveyard, but she doesn't have enough damage dealing power.

It got a quite substantial patch yesterday, not too sure what it changed as I also have shelved it for awhile. It just feels hollow, and the micro transactions sits uncomfortably with me as they have completely stonewalled any other way of earning cards.

Hopefully, when they add more game modes, more cards, better economy that is fairer and doesn't attempt to drive you to purchasing gold just to get your first decent custom deck, better music and a better matchmaking system I will come back to it - but I'm not holding my breath.

Apparantly the Elder Scrolls card game is dropping soon, that might be worth a look.

As it is, I wish they hadn't gone with this F2P model and simply gave us Magic 2016 for £11.99, but oh well!
